Connecticut

Written by: Sharmaine and Jazmin
In March 3, 1636 the English arrived when a large group of Puritans from Massachusetts led by the minister Thomas Hooker founded the Colony
of Connecticut at the city of Hartford. Hooker and Haynes led 100 people to settle Hartford. Under the influence of Hooker, who was a Puritan minister, the settlers passed the “Fundamental Orders of Connecticut”.Governed by the English and is granted a Royal Charter by the King Charles II.- largely self-governed
- constitutional monarchy
Our Economy?
In towns along the coast, fishing, whaling, shipbuilding, and shipping are really popular. We also have timber products, the fur trade, maple syrup, copper, livestock products, horses, rum, whiskey and beer.

We make money by trading flour, dried meat, fish, rum and iron bars to other colonies and Indians. Our land grows crops like beans, corn, pumpkins, squash, and rye.
Starting in 1636 we established small farming communities that witnessed rapid population growth.
Politics
The Fundamental Orders of 1639, the first written constitution in the American colonies, and the Charter of 1662 represent Connecticut’s earliest efforts to establish a representative form of government.

What makes us different?
-Our climate (long cold winters, mild summers) the weather makes it difficult for disease to spread or thrive.- Landscape is hilly, mountainous, rocky, and lots of rivers.- Exporters for rum.
Religion
Our colony’s main religion is Puritanism. We hold Calvinist religious beliefs similar to the English Puritans, but we maintain that our congregations need to be separated from the English state church. We had immigrated to New England during the Great Migration.

The English are the first Europeans to settle here, most came here to look for religious freedom. Our colony was founded by The Puritans and there was no tolerance for other religions.
Events
During 1638 John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton established our colony The New Haven . A year later in 1639, a constitution called, "fundamental orders" of Connecticut was adopted by Freeman of Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor. Also John Haynes was chosen to be the first governor. 1643- We then join in forming the New England confederation.
